One common problem I have found over the years is people trying to connect to a VPN connection from home where they have setup their home network with the same IP addressing as the remote or office network. For example, if your network addresses at home are 192.168.0.0 /24 (the /24 is short for 255.255.255.0) and the remote network uses the same addressing, then what happens is that the computer thinks that the network resources your trying to get to is on the same local network as your computer, so it never sends the traffic over the VPN tunnel to the other side.
To check this, you can check the status of your local network adapter and compare it to the network settings on the VPN tunnel when its up. Also, if it's easy enough, change the local network addressing scheme and then try the VPN tunnel again and see if you can contact resources on the remote network.
